The Crimean Tatar Resource Centre is launching a social media storm dedicated to the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. We urge everyone to become a part of this campaign.<\/p>\n

Every year , the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is\u00a0\u00a0 celebrated on August 9. There are about 476 million indigenous people in the world who are the bearers of 5,000 different cultures.<\/p>\n

Despite the fact that all indigenous peoples have unique culture, customs and history, they face cruel realities: occupation, deportation, harassment, persecution, and become hostages on their own land. Unfortunately, the indigenous peoples of Ukraine – the Crimean Tatars, Karaites and Krymchaks – are no exception.<\/p>\n

In 1783, Russia occupied Crimea, eliminated its statehood, deported Crimean Tatars from their homeland in 1944, and destroyed their cultural heritage. After returning home, Crimean Tatars were forced to leave their land again as a result of the occupation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in 2014. This hybrid deportation continues to this day.<\/p>\n

For many years, the indigenous peoples of Ukraine have been fighting for their rights and for their homeland. In Ukraine, the war for preserving their own identity, for historical justice, national diversity and the rights of indigenous peoples is ongoing.<\/p>\n
