Representatives of the Crimean Tatar Resource Centre will participate in the plenary sessions of the 17th session of the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which will be held from 8-12 July 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland.<\/p>\n
In particular, Eskender Bariiev, Chairman of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Centre, Head of the Department of External Relations and Human Rights Activities of\u00a0 Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, and Luidmyla Korotkikh, lawyer of the CTRC, will join the event.<\/p>\n
The Expert Mechanism provides the Human Rights Council with expertise and advice on the rights of Indigenous Peoples. It assists Member States in achieving the goals of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n
The Expert Mechanism conducts studies to advance the promotion and protection of Indigenous Peoples\u2019 rights by:<\/p>\n
clarifying the implications of key principles, such as self-determination and free, prior and informed consent<\/p>\n
examining good practices and challenges in a broad array of areas pertaining to Indigenous Peoples\u2019 rights,<\/p>\n
suggesting measures that States and others can adopt at the level of laws, policies and programmes.<\/p>\n
Each year, the Expert Mechanism holds a five-day session in which representatives from states, Indigenous Peoples, Indigenous Peoples\u2019 organisations, civil society, inter-governmental organisations and academia take part.<\/p>\n
Also, as part of the 17th session of the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, a side-event on “Integrating Indigenous Peoples at the United Nations”, organized by ICO (International Communities Organisation), will be held on 12 July, with Liudmyla Korotkikh, a representative of the CTRC, participating as a panelist.<\/p>\n
