On May 3, the world celebrates Press Freedom Day. This day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1993 to emphasize the importance of freedom of expression of the media in the modern world.<\/p>\n

Today we would like to draw your attention to the situation in the occupied Crimea. In the context of the long occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, which began in 2014, the problem of freedom of speech on the peninsula is becoming widely relevant. The Russian Federation is increasing pressure on pro-Ukrainian media, which led to their complete elimination.<\/p>\n

Thus, at first, professional journalists continued to work on the peninsula, but with the growing pressure, most of them were forced to leave for mainland Ukraine, while some stayed and clandestinely prepared materials for the Ukrainian media. As a consequence, citizen journalism began to develop on the peninsula. Ordinary people, forced to live under temporary occupation, took their cell phones in their hands and turned on the camera to record numerous offenses against the representatives of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people.
\n<\/b><\/div>\n

During searches of activists’ homes or during “court hearings” in Crimea, Russian security forces could simply smash the phones and cameras of journalists who were recording everything on video.
\nSometimes the occupants also used physical force against them. Russian legislation was used as an instrument of pressure and reprisals against activists. Journalists were brought to administrative responsibility allegedly for organizing or participating in an unsanctioned rally.<\/p>\n

Already now there are a number of activists, civic journalists, bloggers from the “Crimean Solidarity” among the numerous political prisoners of the Kremlin.<\/p>\n

16 Crimean journalists and activists have paid the price for their stance and are now in the FSB’s custody: Server Mustafayev, Timur Ibragimov, Marlen Asanov, Seyran Saliiev, Remzi Bekirov, Ruslan Suleymanov, Osman Arifmemetov, Rustem Sheikhaliev, Amet Suleymanov, Riza Izetov, Emir-Husein Kuku, Aleksei Bessarabov, Nariman Dzhelyalov, Vladislav Yesipenko, Asan Akhtemov and Iryna Danylovych.<\/p><\/div>\n

Now the situation with human rights activist, journalist Lutfiye Zudiyeva, who was searched on February 22, is becoming more acute.
\nAfter the search, Russian law enforcers detained the human rights activist and drew up protocols on the commission of administrative offenses under Parts 2 and 2.1 of Article 13.15 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (abuse of freedom of mass information). The law enforcers’ attention was drawn to three posts by Zudiyeva on her Facebook page. In two of them, referring to Radio Liberty materials, she failed to mention that this media outlet is recognized as a foreign agent in Russia. In the third post, which mentioned the Hizb-ut-Tahrir organization, the occupiers did not find a marking about its recognition as a terrorist organization. On April 17, the “court” found Lutfiye Zudiyeva guilty and imposed a fine of 2,000 rubles (837 UAH).<\/p>\n

This is not the first attempt to prosecute the woman. On July 27, 2023 Lutfiye Zudiyeva was detained under the building of the “Supreme Court of Crimea” in Simferopol, where an appeal in the case of political prisoners Nariman Dzhelyalov and Asan and Aziz Akhtemov was being considered. Later, the journalist was fined 12 thousand rubles.<\/p>\n

As we can see, the peninsula has been turned into a territory of lawlessness with the lowest level of freedom of speech.<\/p><\/div>\n

\nThe Russian Federation’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, marked a new stage of brutal repression of independent journalism in Ukraine.
\nSince the beginning of the Russian invasion, according to the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, the occupiers have killed more than 100 Ukrainian and foreign media workers. Numerous regional media outlets in the temporarily seized territories have been forced to stop working due to threats, destruction of editorial offices, and inability to operate under the temporary occupation.<\/p>\n
