Dear friends, we continue to share with you the works and books of both Ukrainian and foreign academic researchers about the history of the Crimean Tatars and Crimea.<\/p>\n

Today we would like to present you an English-language article titled “The Crimean Crisis. An International Law Perspective” from 2014, authored by Christian Marxsen (Germany). He is a professor, PhD (New York University), head of the Max Planck research group.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that the main focus of the article was to determine the degree of ( non)legality of the Russian Federation’s actions of occupation and attempted annexation of Crimea.<\/p>\n

The author carefully outlines the background to the occupation of Crimea, then examines the legal obligations between Ukraine and Russia regarding their territorial integrity and prohibition of the use of force, and analyzes the legality of the Russian intervention in Crimea.<\/p>\n

Overall, the scholar answers two main questions:<\/p>\n

How, in the end, should the actions aimed at seceding Crimea be characterized in terms of international law? To what extent did Russia violate international law and what is the current status of Crimea?<\/p>\n
