The Russian occupiers claim that on that day, March 12, 2014, the occupation authorities of Crimea allegedly “assisted in the accreditation of foreign media representatives for the most transparent information support of the all-Crimean referendum.”<\/p>\n
But what happened in reality?<\/p>\n
Yes, at first, professional journalists continued to work on the peninsula, but with increasing pressure, most of them were forced to leave for mainland Ukraine, while others stayed and prepared materials for the Ukrainian media underground. As a result, citizen journalism began to develop on the territory. Ordinary people forced to live under temporary occupation picked up their cell phones and turned on their cameras to record numerous violations against the indigenous Crimean Tatar people.<\/p>\n
During searches in activists’ homes or during “court hearings” in Crimea, Russian security forces could simply knock out the phone and camera from journalists who were recording everything on video. Sometimes the occupiers also applied physical force to them. Russian legislation was used as an instrument of pressure and reprisals against activists. Journalists were brought to administrative responsibility for allegedly organizing or participating in an unauthorized rally.
\nAlready, among the numerous political prisoners of the Kremlin are a number of activists, citizen journalists, and bloggers from Crimean Solidarity.<\/p>\n
15 Crimean journalists have paid for their position and are currently in FSB custody:
\nServer Mustafayev, Timur Ibragimov, Marlen Asanov, Seiran Saliiev, Remzi Bekirov, Ruslan Suleymanov, Osman Arifmemetov, Rustem Sheikhaliyev, Amet Suleymanov, Riza Izetov, Emir-Husein Kuku, Oleksiy Bessarabov, Nariman Dzhelialov, Vladyslav Yesypenko and Irina Danilovich.<\/p>\n
The peninsula was turned into a territory of lawlessness with the lowest level of freedom of speech.<\/p>\n
The full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation on February 24, 2022 marked a new stage of brutal repression of independent journalism in Ukraine. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, according to the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, the occupiers have killed more than 70 Ukrainian and foreign media workers.
