There are 3 indigenous peoples in Ukraine: Crimean Tatars, Karaites and Krymchaks. Unfortunately, for the tenth year in a row, the indigenous peoples have been living in war. Moreover, their homeland, Crimea, is used by Russia as a springboard for military equipment and bombardment of Ukraine.<\/p>\n
The majority of human rights violations are committed against representatives of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people. For example, during the entire period of occupation of Crimea, the number of political prisoners and those prosecuted in criminal cases reached 305, 205 of whom are the representatives of the Crimean Tatar people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Moreover, a total of 9006 violations of fundamental human rights were recorded in the occupied Crimea in 2017-2023, 6365 of which were against members of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Today, Ukraine is really trying to do everything to protect and develop three indigenous peoples of Ukraine, not in word but in deed.<\/p>\n It is thanks to the Law of Ukraine “On Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine” which was adopted on July 1, 2021, Ukraine can serve as an example for many countries around the world where indigenous peoples are still fighting for their right to self-determination.<\/p>\n An indicator of the effectiveness of the Law of Ukraine “On Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine” was the hysterical reaction of Russian President Vladimir Putin. After all, the adoption of this law marked the beginning of the destruction of the “Russian world” ideology, and it was a real step towards the deoccupation of Crimea.<\/p>\n Therefore, it is only in Ukraine’s interest to continue to protect and realize the collective rights of the indigenous peoples of Ukraine. What do we mean by this?<\/p>\n 1. The right to self-determination of the indigenous peoples of Ukraine has been realized – amendments have been made to Chapter X of the Constitution of Ukraine – the national-territorial autonomy of the Crimean Tatar people has been restored;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 2. Implementation of the Law of Ukraine “On Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine” \u2013 the laws of Ukraine<\/p>\n and other regulatory acts have been brought in line with this Law;<\/p>\n 3. The activities of representative bodies of indigenous peoples in Crimea have been restored with the appropriate regulation of their legal status;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 4. The principle of free, prior and informed consent on issues related to the rights and legitimate interests of indigenous peoples of Ukraine is being implemented;<\/p>\n 5. The right to allocate part of the revenues received by the budgets of all levels from the use of natural resources located on the territory of Crimea to the needs of the indigenous peoples of Ukraine is being realized;<\/p>\n 6. The media of the indigenous peoples of Ukraine have been created;<\/p>\n 7. Educational institutions have been established to ensure the study of the language, history, and culture of indigenous peoples;<\/p>\n 8. Revival and development of spiritual, religious and cultural traditions and customs, preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage have been ensured;<\/p>\n 9. Historical justice has been restored, historical place names in Crimea have been restored, and a legal assessment of the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people has been provided;<\/p>\n 10.
