The Crimean Tatar Resource Center has repeatedly emphasized the importance of restoring historical toponyms in Crimea. Indeed, the policy of large-scale renaming of various geographic names on the peninsula has caused a huge damage to the indigenous peoples of Ukraine and to Ukraine itself. But in fact, the restoration of toponyms in Crimea is also important for the international community.<\/p>\n
We emphasize that place names have always been an ideological tool. None of the empires neglected it. To designate a territory with its own names meant to assert its power. the Russian Federation was not an exception. Everywhere, the Russian Federation tried to root itself, destroy historical place names and introduce its own Russian names.<\/p>\n
Ukraine, and Crimea in particular, was subjected to large-scale renaming of various toponyms. The Soviet government tried to destroy everything associated with the indigenous people of Ukraine, which is currently being continued by the Russian authorities.<\/p>\n
So why is it important for the international community to restore historical toponyms in Crimea?<\/p>\n
To restore justice and preserve heritage.<\/p>\n
To establish the rule of international law.<\/p>\n
To overcome the consequences of colonization.<\/p>\n
To familiarize the international community with the heritage of the indigenous peoples of Ukraine.<\/p>\n
It is important to talk about the restoration of toponymy in Crimea and to raise this topic at the international level, because all civilized countries should understand the importance of this step.<\/p>\n
For example, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, back in the early 1990s got rid of all monuments to Soviet leaders and Soviet toponymy.<\/p>\n
