His maternal ancestors were Cossacks of the Kan<span lang=\"EN-US\">iv<\/span>\u00a0regiment. Skovoroda\u2019s mother herself had a maiden name of Shan<span lang=\"EN-US\">hi<\/span>re<span lang=\"EN-US\">i<\/span>eva. It is known that in\u00a0<span data-ukrnet-code=\"1650\">1650<\/span>\u00a0one of the ancestors of Pela<span lang=\"EN-US\">hiia<\/span>\u00a0Shan<span lang=\"EN-US\">h<\/span>ire<span lang=\"EN-US\">i<\/span>eva was Ivan Shan<span lang=\"EN-US\">h<\/span>ire<span lang=\"EN-US\">i<\/span>ev, a commissioned colonel of the Kan<span lang=\"EN-US\">i<\/span>vs<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0regiment<\/span>.
