In mainland Ukraine too, the saying \u201cnext year in Bakhchisaray\u201d sounded na\u00efve and awkward as those who uttered it understood their self-deception perfectly well. Yet, three years later, de-occupy Bakhchisaray is becoming a real possibility.\u00a0Moreover, many commentators\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2023\/01\/13\/peace-ukraine-crimea-putin-00077746\">argue<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthere will be no peace without Crimea\u201d, and the majority of the Ukrainian population support the idea of the peninsula&#8217;s de-occupation.<\/p>\n<p>So it makes sense to think deeply about our relation to the peninsula and people who live there, especially the indigenous Crimean Tatars. The Ukrainian state and society need to clearly understand the nature of this relationship and the basis for Ukraine\u2019s rule there. Such understanding should lay at the core of the wholesale strategy of Crimea\u2019s reintegration.
