The Crimean Tatar Resource Center has repeatedly noted the importance of restoring historical toponymy in Crimea. Indeed, the policy of large-scale renaming of various geographical names on the peninsula dealt a huge blow to the indigenous peoples of Ukraine and to Ukraine itself. But in fact, the restoration of toponyms in Crimea is also important for the international community.<\/p>\n

We emphasize that toponymy has always been an ideological tool. None of the empires neglected this. To designate the territory with their own names meant to testify to their power. The Russian Federation is no exception. Everywhere, the Russian Federation tried to take root, destroy the historical toponyms of the area and introduce its own Russian names.<\/p>\n

Ukraine, and in particular, the Crimea has undergone large-scale renaming of various geographical names. The Soviet government tried to destroy everything that was connected with the indigenous people of Ukraine – the Crimean Tatars, which is now being continued by the Russian government.<\/p>\n

So, why is it important for the international community to restore historical toponyms in Crimea?<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. To restore justice and preserve heritage.<\/li>\n
  2. To establish the rule of international law.<\/li>\n
  3. To overcome the consequences of colonization.<\/li>\n
  4. To familiarize the international community with the heritage of the indigenous peoples of Ukraine.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    It is important to talk about the restoration of toponymy in Crimea and raise this topic at the international level, because all civilized countries should understand the importance of this step. For example, in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, back in the early 1990s, they got rid of all monuments to Soviet leaders and Soviet toponymy.<\/p>\n
