“In 1979, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. This international treaty entered into force exactly forty years ago – on September 3, 1981. Despite the fact that the Convention was adopted 40 years ago, it remains relevant today, because every day we are faced with various manifestations of discrimination against women. We want to focus our attention directly on the situation in the occupied Crimea”,- Podvorniak noted.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The communications manager of the CTRC stressed that after the occupation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, hundreds of activists fell under repression for their civil position. At first, they were only men. However, the Russian authorities did not stop and began to restrict the rights of the female part of the peninsula's population.<\/p>\n

Liudmyla Korotkykh elaborated on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and explained its importance.<\/p>\n

\n

“The 1979 UNGA adoption of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women was the result of more than 30 years of work by the UN Commission on the Status of Women to protect and promote the world's women's rights”,- she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\"\" <\/p>\n

\n

“When we talk about the women of the occupied Crimea, and especially about the representatives of the indigenous Crimean Tatar people, it is important for us to understand that they are subjected to multiple forms of discrimination. Because these women are discriminated against on the basis of gender, ethnicity and religion. This is an important issue that requires a lot of attention”,- added Korotkykh.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Hulnara Abdullaieva turned to history and showed what was the role of women in the Crimean Tatar national movement. Indeed, in fact, the female part of the population actively participated in this process.<\/p>\n

\n

“Analyzing the entire history of the Crimean Tatar people, this is probably the first time that Crimean Tatar women face discrimination in the occupied Crimea. After all, Crimean Tatar women have always played an important role. They were not only mothers, wives or sisters, they were full members of society”,- she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The manager of the CTRC Zarema Bariieva drew attention to the modern realities in the occupied Crimea and spoke about the persecution of women for their civil position.<\/p>\n

\n

“Hundreds of women and girls have been persecuted and discriminated against. The most vulnerable group on the peninsula remains the families of the Kremlin's political prisoners, who were left without male support: 64 wives, 119 mothers, 98 daughters”,- said the manager of the CTRC.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to Bariieva, the persecution of Crimean activists has become a negative trend. Since 2014, the CTRC has recorded the following violations of women's rights:<\/p>\n

18 searches;<\/p>\n

3 attempts to prosecute;<\/p>\n

2 arrests in absentia;<\/p>\n

21 administrative cases;<\/p>\n

5 prosecutions;<\/p>\n

1 enforced disappearance;<\/p>\n

2 cases of pressure on lawyers;<\/p>\n

In addition, 12 deaths of women were recorded during the occupation of Crimea.<\/p>\n

Bariieva added that the decision of April 26, 2016 on recognizing the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people as an extremist organization and prohibiting its activities in the Russian Federation violated the rights of 4 women – members of  Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, as well as more than 200 women – members from the system of local and regional Mejlises of the Crimean Tatars.<\/p>\n

In addition, due to the occupation of Crimea, 26 delegates of the Qurultay of the Crimean Tatar people have restrictions in the implementation of representative functions, since there is a threat of their further persecution.<\/p>\n

Crimean lawyer Emine Avamileva, using a personal example, spoke about how women are discriminated against in Crimea. She noted that since 2014 she has been systematically given warnings on the inadmissibility of breaking the law in connection with her activities.<\/p>\n

Liudmyla Korotkykh noted the need to study the situation in this area. The manager of the CTRC told about the mechanisms which can be used to protect the rights of women and about the work of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center in this area.<\/p>\n

\n

“The Crimean Tatar Resource Center systematically studies and analyzes the situation with violation of women's rights in the occupied Crimea. We record all cases of discrimination on the peninsula and inform the international community about it. We systematically send reports to specialized institutions and mechanisms of such international organizations as the UN and OSCE. Moreover, we not only provide information, but also offer exact steps to improve the situation of women in Crimea”,- she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Korotkykh emphasized that in June the Crimean Tatar Resource Center prepared a report Persecution and violence against women in the occupied Crimea, which was presented as part of the day of general discussion on the topic The rights of indigenous women and girls during the meeting of the 79th session UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, and also published on its website.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
