The inhumane conditions of the commandant regime, which lasted from 1944 to 1956 – famine, epidemics, repression and imprisonment in places of special settlements – caused the mass death of the Crimean Tatars, the bulk of whom were old people, women and children. Trying to hide its crimes, the Soviet state carefully hid the facts of the demographic losses of the Crimean Tatars as a result of deportation and the regime of special settlements. According to the information of the National Movement of Crimean Tatars, which conducted a census of the Crimean Tatar population in the mid-1960s, a total of 238,500 people were expelled from Crimea, and the death toll in the first years was 110,200, or 46.2% of all those expelled.<\/p>\n
For more than 50 years the ethnonym Crimean Tatars was withdrawn from scientific and legal use. The Soviet government renamed all the toponyms of Crimea, which indicated their relationship with the Crimean Tatars, introduced a ban on the study of the Crimean Tatar language, the development of cultural and national traditions, as well as a ban on returning to Crimea.<\/p>\n
And only in 1989, the Supreme Soviet of the USSR adopted a declaration on the recognition of the forced resettlement of the Crimean Tatars from Crimea as criminal. It was in this year that the people returned en masse to their homeland, to their peninsula, to their Crimea.<\/p>\n
It seemed like a victory, but history repeats itself, unfortunately…<\/p>\n
In 2014, the Russian Federation occupied Crimea.<\/p>\n
Daily searches, disappearances of people, arrests for a simple post on Facebook – all these are not fictions, but the realities of today. The Russian occupation of Crimea in 2014 and the subsequent systemic repressions, detentions, interrogations, searches and arrests, illegal transferrings to Russian prisons, violent abductions and murders caused a new mass migration of the indigenous people, and in fact, their hybrid deportation.<\/p>\n
Active population replacement is underway.<\/p>\n
The indigenous people are purposefully squeezed out of the peninsula as a population disloyal to Russia. The Crimean Tatars create an image of a hostile nation, open criminal proceedings on the so-called Hizb ut-Tahrir cases, accusations of terrorism, possession of weapons, and calls for a coup d'etat.<\/p>\n
According to the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, during the entire period of the occupation 230 people were prosecuted in the so-called criminal cases, 158 of whom were Crimean Tatars. 21 people were forcibly kidnapped and not found, 15 of them were Crimean Tatars, 55 more died, of which 25 were Crimean Tatars.<\/p>\n
The occupation authorities are carrying out systematic repressions against members of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, against civilian journalists, against activists, against those who disagree with the statement about the Russian Crimea. Those who are actively fighting the occupation regime cannot live in their homes in their native land, cannot visit their elderly parents and relatives, and some cannot properly bury them. After all, as soon as they set foot on the occupied territory – immediately they are faced with an arrest.<\/p>\n
This is not only the pain of the Crimean Tatars, but our common one. Realizing all the danger of the actions of the occupying state, we must unite and increase pressure on the Russian Federation in order to preserve the indigenous Crimean Tatar people. 77 years ago, on May 18, 1944, by the decision of the leadership of the USSR, the Crimean Tatar people were subjected to forcible and total deportation from their historical homeland – Crimea, and sent to remote areas of the Soviet Union.
