“This year was marked by mass arrests – remember the March events, when at once they conducted a lot of searches and detentions of activists of Crimean Solidarity. These are the people who are trying to inform the public and international organizations about human rights violations in Crimea. This suggests that the occupation authorities don’t like that we are actively informing the entire international community”,- said Bariiev.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He emphasized that in 2019, religious arrests and persecutions were also observed – in the Hizb ut-Tahrir affairs and Jehovah's Witnesses.<\/p>\n

\n

“In Russia, Hizb ut-Tahrir is considered a banned organization, which allows the Russian security forces to arrest more and more people. There is another tendency: the Criminal Code articles are getting more and more harsh for Hizb ut-Tahrir, they apply article 205.5 of the Russian Criminal Code, but instead of the second part – membership in a terrorist organization – are transferred to the first – in fact, the organization of such a scructure. The court imposes maximum sentences of 17-20 years on people who have never committed crimes. Moreover, everything is based on secret witnesses – FSB officers”,- the Head of the Board of the CTRC outlined.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Also, Bariiev added that this year there are a lot of victims. For example, those who went missing in 2018 were found dead.<\/p>\n

“In 2019, attempts to close Crimean Tatar schools were continued, and only according to official data the status of 16 of them changed: 7 schools remained monolingual Crimean Tatar, 5 schools were transferred to bilingual education, the remaining 4 schools were transferred to the Russian language. When we received the decision of the UN International Court of Justice in The Hague, and Russia failed to challenge it, they began to inform us that schools began to initiate the submission of applications by the parents of Crimean Tatar students so that they could learn the language optionally”, – he emphasized.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Speaking about the environmental situation, Bariiev highlighted the problem of mass pumping of water from underground lakes using wells, which will lead to big problems: in March 2020, the water will most likely end. Permanent military exercises also cause great damage to the ecosystem of Crimea.<\/p>\n

Eskender Bariiev considers it important to adopt a resolution by the UN General Assembly on human rights violations in Crimea, so that “we once again maintain and demonstrate a coalition of support for Ukraine within 60-69 countries, which are firm in their position of the de-occupation of Crimea and the protection of human rights on the peninsula”.<\/p>\n

\n

“These are mainly Western countries that continue the sanctions policy against Russia. We need to maintain and expand this coalition in order to extend restrictions. We want personal Western sanctions to be adapted to Crimea, so that criminals in uniform and civil servants of the occupation authorities who systematically violate the rights people, abusing their official powers, are held accountable”, – concluded the Head of the Board of the CTRC.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
