During the hearing, Bekirov talked about the conditions in the detention facility in Simferopol and stated that his case is trumped up.<\/p>\n

\n

“Defamed, ill-disguised case. It is an absolute lie. And I have to prove them wrong. I am a Crimean Tatar and I am proud of it” … “It takes forty minutes to call paramedics if someone is sick. One has to knock the door so hard and die three times for paramedics to finally show up. Services come and fill in their papers that I have split meals here. This is not true! If I ate what they give me here, I would have been dead long ago. I eat for an entire month thirty kilos of food that my family is allowed to bring” – said Bekirov.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

“No one examines me. I see three doctors in one hour. Our specialists in universities cannot even conclude the diagnosis in such a short time, it takes months. Here, the doctor of the highest qualification examines and establishes the diagnosis just in one hour. Everywhere, they say I am in perfect condition. There are many people like me here. Just trump-up charges” – added activist.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The lawyer petitioned to substitute the pre-trial restrictions for the house arrest but the “judge” denied the motion. The lawyer pointed out that the prosecution’s argument is not “static”, therefore Bekirov cannot destroy it under house arrest. Ladin added that Bekirov also cannot hinder the activity of preliminary investigation bodies, since this stage of investigation is over. The attorney also added that the defendant cannot threaten witnesses since the only witness is secret.<\/p>\n

As far as the medical examination is concerned, the attorney Aleksei Ladin pointed out that the forensic analysis was done by eight people, whose positions and medical qualifications remain unknown. Hence, the defense team does not find forensic analysis satisfactory.<\/p>\n

Previously, Lyudmila Denisova, the Commissioner for Human Rights in Ukraine, called the representatives of the international community to help release Edem Bekirov from Simferopol detention center and to adopt measures to fulfill the decision of the European Court of Human Rights to save his life.<\/p>\n

Edem Bekirov was detained by Russian immigration officers around 8.30 a.m. on 12 December 2018, while crossing the border at the checkpoint “Chongar”. Until evening, his location remained unknown. He is a Crimean Tatar Ukrainian citizen, born in 1961, residing in Novoalekseevka village in Kherson region.<\/p>\n

On December 13, Kyiv district “court” in Simferopol put Edem Bekirov under arrest until  February 11, 2019. On  December 20, Federal Security Service indicted him on the illegal arms’ circulation, transportation, sale, storage, and transportation of explosives (part 2, article 222, Constitution of Ukraine; part 2, article 222.1 Constitution of Ukraine).<\/p>\n

On  June 6, 2019, Kyiv district “court” in Simferopol again continued the detention term until  August 12, 2019.<\/p>\n

On  June 11, European Court of Human Rights ordered to urgently hospitalize Edem Bekirov.<\/p>\n

On  July 10, European Court of Human Rights ordered to conduct an independent and specialized medical examination and prepare separate, detailed conclusions on all of his health problems.<\/p>\n

Edem Bekirov is one of the Crimean Tatar activists in Novoalekseevka village. He is a disabled person of group I. In January 2018, he went through a difficult coronary artery bypass surgery. Besides, he wears a cast on his right leg.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
