How to assess the degree of collaborationism of the inhabitants of the occupied Crimea?

4 May 2022

Head of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, Head of the Department of Legal Affairs and Foreign Affairs of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Eskender Bariiev in an interview with UA SOUTH spoke about who is actually a collaborator in the occupied Crimea.

“In fact, all people living in the occupied territory are collaborators, but we must take into account the degree of collaboration. How can you compare an official or a soldier who took an oath to Ukraine and went over to the side of the occupiers and a doctor who took the Hippocratic oath and continues to work and provide medical assistance to Ukrainians in the occupied territories? What should be the action? How can this be assessed? Now all these questions remain open. In this regard, the CTRC has developed this methodology, which is an auxiliary tool so that people can assess the degree of their collaboration themselves. This classification can be an important tool for the sanctions policy, both for Ukrainian state bodies and for international organizations”,- said the Head of the Board of the CTRC.

According to the experts of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, it is advisable to apply a number of indicators of responsibility to him by evaluating the forms of collaboration in relation to a particular person in order to subsequently respond to his actions. The totality of such indicators should indicate the need to include a person on the sanctions lists and the degree of urgency of such a need in relation to this person.
