Head of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, Head of the Department of Legal and Foreign Affairs of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Eskender Bariiev, in an interview with UA: Crimea TV channel, commented on the statement of the Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Ihor Zhovkva that Ukraine will not forcibly deport Russians who moved to Crimea after occupation. The expert believes that with such statements, officials send a message to the occupants to strengthen the policy of replacing the population of the peninsula.
“Today, with such statements, our high-ranking officials send a message to the Russians, the occupants, to promote the policy of population replacement. After all, we understand that any aggressor, when seizing another land, first of all tries to replace its population with his own in order to consolidate and root that part of the population, who thinks differently, who does not know Ukraine, the Crimean Tatars”,- he explained.
Bariiev also drew attention to the legal aspect. The Russian Federation today promotes the resettlement of Russians to the territory of the occupied Crimea, violating the IV Geneva Convention, conventions related to humanitarian law, and also violates Ukrainian legislation.
“We must prevent the mass settlement of Crimea by citizens of the Russian Federation. Otherwise, even after de-occupation, we will have Crimea not just as a territory, but we will have Crimea as an explosive barrel, which will always be a threat to the unitary Ukrainian state”,- the expert emphasized.
