The Russian Federation deliberately creates a catastrophic situation with water in the occupied Crimea - Bariiev

26 March 2021

Head of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, head of the department of legal and foreign affairs of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Eskender Bariiev in an interview with Channel 5 said that the Russian Federation is deliberately creating a catastrophic situation with water in the occupied Crimea, so that later international organizations would force Ukraine to supply water to the peninsula.

“The situation with water is really catastrophic, and it could be even worse. But I want to draw attention to the fact that the Russian Federation itself is leading to this situation, so that later international organizations would force Ukraine to supply water”,- he said.

Bariiev noted that the influence of the occupants on the natural water sources of Crimea has already led to an imbalance of salt and fresh water, and it will take at least 50 years to just start restoring the balance.

“How we will get Crimea - we must think today. Today we must do everything so that the international community can influence the Russian Federation, so as not to destroy Crimea, so that we get Crimea at least somehow preserved”,- the expert added.

The Head of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center emphasized that in the film Crimea. Dehydration the experts of the CTRC showed that there are enough resources to provide water to 2.5 million citizens in Crimea - and that is how many people were on the peninsula before its occupation. However, the irrational policy of the Russian Federation on the destruction of natural sources leads to the fact that water may indeed be insufficient.

“We see other factors that are unacceptable for us. This is not only replacement, but also an increase in population, this is the construction of housing stock, all this needs to be provided with water. Military bases and, in addition, even the construction of the bridge and the Tavryda highway, they require a lot of water. That is why there are problems in the accumulation of natural sources, because about 300,000 bushes and trees were cut down”,- he explained.
