Bariiev: Ukraine should have the Presidential Commissioner for Political Prisoners (video)

5 May 2020

The Head of the Board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center, a member of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Eskender Bariiev, on the air of the TV channel UA:Crimea, spoke about the electronic database “Victims of the Occupation of Crimea”, previously presented by the CTRC.

“Our organization initially dealt with this issue. We always tried to systematize the information, but to date lists vary between human rights organizations and government bodies. We began to carry out the classification, and developed three main categories: political prisoners and persecuted by the occupation authorities, victims of enforced disappearances and killed people during the occupation period of Crimea, which are presented in an electronic database on our website. I want us to come to one definitive list”,- said Eskender Bariiev.

According to him, the main reason for the difference between the lists is the fact that today in Ukraine there is no law on political prisoners, respectively, there is no clear definition.

Bariiev also commented on the topic of prisoner exchange, and emphasized that Ukraine should have the Presidential Commissioner for Political Prisoners - the person in charge for the upcoming exchanges.
