“International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples as an instrument for protection the rights of indigenous peoples”(video)

The Crimean Tatar Resource Center with the support of the Open Society Foundation held an international expert online discussion on the topic “International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples as an instrument for protection the rights of indigenous peoples ”. At the event, representatives of the world’s indigenous peoples spoke out in support of the Crimean Tatar people and stated the importance of consolidating and using UN mechanisms to realize their rights. Ukrainian experts stressed the need for legal regulation of the status of indigenous peoples in Ukraine.

Participants in the expert online discussion discussed the current challenges for indigenous peoples in Crimea and in the world, Significance of Celebrating the “International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples and the process of developing International Standards for Indigenous Peoples' Rights. The experts also paid attention to the topic of a roadmap for Ukraine on indigenous issues and preparing for the International Decade of Indigenous Languages 2022-2032 as an opportunity for Ukraine and its indigenous peoples.

The speakers stressed the need to consolidate and use UN mechanisms to exercise their rights. A number of experts in their presentations highlighted the need to ensure the continuity of knowledge and experience among young indigenous peoples. The participants also discussed the methods and experiences of the world's indigenous peoples in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Ukrainian experts in their speeches emphasized the importance and necessity of legal regulation of the status of indigenous peoples in Ukraine.
