Political prisoner Edem Bekirov has his arrest extended until the 12th of August

7 June 2019

On Thursday, the 6th of June, the so-called Kyiv District Court of Simferopol extended the arrest of a political prisoner and a severely disabled person, Edem Bekirov, until the 12th of August. The following was reported by the Crimean solidarity media agency.

At the beginning of a so-called proceeding Bekirov’s lawyer Olexii Ladin filed a request to interrogate the witnesses who are able and willing to refute the entirely false accusations made by the prosecution, based only on the testimony of only a single unknown person presented in the course of the proceeding as Memetov, but the  so-called judge rejected the request.

“The defendant’s side represented by lawyers Ladin and Veliliaiev expressed their indignation by the court’s decision over the fact that Bekirov was not provided with proper medical care, nor given a necessary access to the ambulance, considering the fact that he is a severely disabled person, a diabetic and has shunts in his very heart. As a diabetic, he should have his meals every three hours every day, but on the day of the so-called court hearing, he was not provided with a proper meal from 08:00 to 21:00”, - the report informs.

It is noted that Edem Bekirov remained silent during the so-called proceedings, because he considers the situation to be an entirely politically motivated farce. He prepared a poster that reads as follows: "First the young, then the men, now women. Who is next? Children?".

“Islyam Velilyaev prepared a set of documents that were submitted to the court, requesting Bekirov to be transferred under house arrest. Also, in order to ensure the success of the plea, a whole ser of medical documents was submitted and attached to the file of the proceeding. The investigation according to Velilyaev did not include these documents to the aforementioned file thus recognizing Bekirov an entirely healthy individual", - say the activists.

It is reported that within two weeks, according to the suggestion of lawyer Velilyaev, the investigation will be completed and the charges will be brought against Bekirov.

We remind that on the 12th of December 2018, a citizen of Ukraine, a Crimean Tatar, Edem Bekirov, born in 1961, a resident of Novooleksiivka village of Kherson oblast (region) was detained by Russian border guards while attempting to enter the Crimea through the Chonhar checkpoint. He was detained at roughly 08:30 in the morning while passing through passport control. Until the very evening, his whereabouts remained unknown at all.

On the 13th of December 2018, the so-called Kyiv District Court of Simferopol arrested Edem Bekirov until the 11th of February 2019. On the 20th of December, he was formally charged by FSB with illegal arms trafficking and illegal transfer, sale, storage, transportation or carrying of explosives (part 2 of article 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation and part 2 of article 222.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).

On the 10th of April, the so-called Kyiv District Court of Simferopol failed to satisfy the request of Bekirov’s lawyer Islyam Velilyaev to change the measure of restraint applied to Edem Bekirov for house arrest due to his severe illness and extended his detention until the 12th of June 2019.

Edem Bekirov is one of the Crimean Tatar public activists of the village Novooleksiivka village. He is severely disabled. In January 2018, he underwent a complicated heart surgery, during which he had 4 shunts implanted. Moreover, the man is an amputee having his right leg removed below the knee and thus forced to wear a removable prosthesis.
